Hormones are power packed chemicals produced by several special glands called “ductless glands” or “endocrine glands” present in various locations in the human body. The hormones control almost all physical and mental features of every person and a “normal” or “supernormal” individual’s entire personality is based on the delicate balance between these large numbers of hormones.
When this delicate balance is upset a variety of symptoms like acne, insomnia, loss of memory, weight gain or facial hairs in girls and feminine breasts in boys etc. can result! And there is a hereditary correlation of many of these endocrine glands and their balanced functions.
Pimples or “Acne”
as it is called in medical parlance is clearly due to hormonal imbalance – imbalance between the feminine Oestrogen and the masculine Testosterone, both of which are present in different proportions in both sexes.
The exact nature and extent of the hormonal imbalance cannot be precisely estimated in an individual case. But excessive action of testosterone type of hormones on oil producing glands results in over production of oil in the sebaceous (oil producing) glands in face, neck, back etc. this happens around the age of 10-12 years. Increased oil production irritate the pores of these glands, cause excessive proliferation and stickiness of lining cells blocking the pores, seen as “white head” on the face. Oil builds up inside culminating in rupture, reaction and inflammation seen as a yellowish “pustule”. This excessive oil production has nothing to do with taking highly fatty and rich food as was wrongly believed earlier.
Possible triggers for acne are hormonal changes at puberty in both sexes, during menstrual cycles or related to birth control pills and menopause in females. Some drugs used in epilepsy and depression, constant pressure and irritation by head gears or helmets and wearing facial make ups over long durations are other factors in causation. Stress and sleeplessness are also important causative factors. Among drugs “lithium” can make pimples worse.
But an important causative factor is heredity; if both parents have or had pimples, 3 out of 4 of their children are likely to be affected.
Fine tuning Hormones in Acne:
It is better to take the help of an experienced medical professional for any hormonal manipulations as it is a trial and error method and like traversing between the devil and the deep sea! Someone not taking birth control pills may start taking it as it may lower levels of free circulating testosterone. If someone getting pimples is already on oral contraceptive tablets, the doctor may change to a different formulation, having more of estrogens and less of androgens. Certain formulations containing “levonorgestrel” and synthetic forms of “progesterone” are best avoided. And instead of these birth control pills one other alternative is “spironolactone” (brand name ‘aldactone’) given for high B.P. This latter is to be completely avoided if the patient is pregnant. All these medications are to be taken under regular and repeated supervision of a qualified specialist.
