Disorders
It is a condition in which normal patterns of language acquisition
are disturbed from the early stages of development. The child’s speech
milestones are often delayed.
The following features are often suggestive of the presence of
language disorders:
v The child’s acquisition of speech sounds is delayed and/or deviant
leading to: misarticulations, omissions, distortions or substitution of speech
sounds and errors in sound production. Others may find it difficult to
understand what the child is saying.
v The child may not be able to speak single words or word
approximations by the age of 2 years; may fail to generate simple two-word
phrases by 3 years; may have a restricted vocabulary; may have difficulties in
selecting appropriate words and may have immature sentence structure
v The child may fail to respond to familiar names in the absence of
nonverbal cues by the age of 1 year; may not be able to identify at least a few
common objects by 18 months; may fail to follow simple, routine instructions by
the age of 2 years; may not be able to understand grammatical structures and
may lasck understanding of more subtle aspects of language such as tone of
voice, gesture etc.
