Dermatology made easy
CYST: A cyst is a closed sac that contains liquid or semisolid material. On palpation
a cyst is usually resilient.
ex:epidermal cyst

FISSURE: A fissure is a thin crack within epidermis or epithelium, and is due to excessive dryness.
ex: tinea pedis, eczema

MACULE: A circumscribed area of change in normal skin color without elevation or depression of the surrounding skin, it is not palpable. A macule greater than 0.5 cm. may be referred to as a Patch.
ex: freckle, fixed drug eruption, tinea versicolor, vitiligo.

NODULE: A circumscribed, often round, solid lesion more than 0.5 cm in diameter; a large nodule is referred to as a tumor.
ex: furuncle, melanoma, warts

PAPULE: A superficial solid lesion less than 0.5cm in diameter,most of it is elevated above, rather than deep, within the plane of the surrounding skin. A papule is palpable.
ex: molluscum contagiousum, warts, acne .

POLYP:A usually nonmalignant growth of tissue protruding from the mucous lining of an organ such as the nose, bladder, or intestine, often causing obstruction.
ex: Nasal polyps

PUSTULE: A circumscribed superficial cavity of the skin that contains a purulent exudate.
ex: folliculitis, acne.

VESICLE: A circumscribed, elevated, superficial cavity containing fluid. less than 0.5cm in diameter; otherwise called a bulla.
ex: herpes simplex, contact dermatitis, varicella zoster, impetigo.

WHEAL: a firm edematous papule or plaque resulting from infiltration of the dermis with fluid; they are transient and may last only a few hours.

ex: insect bites, exposure to heat, cold or exercise
