What's
Involved in Marriage Counselling?
In the first marriage counselling visit a
psychologist will ask many questions about the nature of your problems, causes,
history of your relationship, etc. in order to formulate a counselling plan.
Marriage counselling is likely to involve several components in which specific
relationship issues are addressed. It will also usually involve the couple in
some home-based tasks where they practise skills addressed in session. Marriage
counselling will often involve strategies such as: communication training,
problem solving skills training, and strategies designed to break negative
patterns of interaction. Obviously each couple presents with a unique set of
problems and hence the approach taken varies from couple to couple.
The number of counselling sessions
required obviously varies depending on the nature of a couple's problems, but
we have found that many couples attend for around six to eight sessions.
Couples usually attend weekly to fortnightly initially, and less frequently as
therapy progresses.
