Learning Disorders - Specific Learning Disability - Dyslexia
These are disorders in which the normal patterns of skill
acquisition are disturbed because of some abnormalities in cognitive processing
due to some type of biological dysfunction. They are not simply a consequence
of a lack of opportunity to learn, nor are they due to any form of acquired
brain trauma or disease.
In it children are seen to experience difficulties in reading,
writing, spellings and arithmetical computations. There is a specific and
significant impairment in the learning of scholastic skills.
The following
features are often suggestive of the presence of dyslexia:
v The child may find it difficult to read fluently, shall often skip
words while reading, read with lot of effort, mispronounce lot of words and is
likely to make guesses while reading. Reversals of words in sentences or of
letters within the words may be seen.
v While writing they shall skip words, lines, matras, punctuation
errors and are likely to make lot of errors while coping from the textbook or
from the blackboard. They may have poor handwriting, macro or micro-writing,
may have difficulty maintaining adequate spacing between words and lines, may
engage in lot of over-writing or cutting.
v They may not like to do written work and their class works, home
works and dairies are often incomplete.
v They are usually seen to engage in rote learning.
v They may make lot of spelling mistakes, may not be clear with the
concept of matras, half-letter etc, and may be seen to write different
spellings of the same word at different times.
v They may make lot of errors in calculations, may have difficulty in
carryout additions, subtraction, multiplication and division adequately, may
not be clear with lot of mathematical concepts, may fail to understand the
concepts underlying particular arithmetical operations, lack understanding of
mathematical terms and signs, may fail to recognize numerical symbols, may
experience difficulty in properly aligning numbers or in inserting decimal
points or symbols during calculation, may have poor spatial organization of
arithmetical calculations, may have inability to learn multiplication tables
satisfactorily and may find it very difficult to understand reasoning sums and
to elicit the computations involved in reasoning sums.
